The Marcellus Shale covers the westernmost portion of Maryland. With the advent of horizontal drilling technology combined with modern hydraulic fracturing techniques, the Marcellus Shale is now economically viable, prompting recovery and marketing of this substantial resource of natural gas. The location of this resource near major natural gas markets of the Northeast contributes to favorable pricing for Marcellus natural gas.
